Our Library

Introduction
Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre’s Library was established in 1982. The main objective was and still is to meet the information requirements of the Centre and stakeholders at various levels. These include researchers, planners, policy makers, extension workers, trainers, students and the general public. The library holds a special collection on food and nutrition and related fields such as health, agriculture, community development, education, environment, water and sanitation. The Library is accessible to all who need to use it although lending is restricted to staff members.

Acquisition
Since its establishment, the library has been growing steadily with respect to number of publications and type of services. Most of the reader materials (in hard copies and electronic form) are acquired through gifts and donations from individuals and institutions, purchases and information/publication exchange with partners. In addition the Centre generates many publications and reports which are the result of research undertaken as part of the Centre’s program activities conducted both inside and outside the country. All of them are available through purchase or exchange with our partners and the general public.

Services
The Library offers traditional services which include Reference and Lending, Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI), Current Awareness Service (CAS), photocopying and report binding. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have very much uplifted the library traditional services in terms of speed, efficiency and reliability. ICT based services at the Centre include Internet surfing, e-mail and the use of online and off-line databases. The collection of CD-ROMS is also available for lending.

Publications
Dissemination of Food and Nutrition information through publications, (books, reports, periodicals, thesis, dictionaries, booklets, posters, brochures, fact-sheets, newspapers, etc.) CD-ROM, video tapes and photographs remain one of the major activities of the Library. This includes information sharing through exchange of publications and book lists with staff and other institutions. Our participation in book exhibitions, also gives us an opportunity to see what other partners have for exchange and knowledge sharing. In so doing the library collection is growing according to the Centre’s requirements.
